Aus für IRONMAN 70.3 Pula!

Zwei Tage, nachdem wir mit dem neuen IRONMAN 70.3-Bewerb in Slowenien ein neues Rennen an der Adria vorgestellt haben, kommt auf der anderen Seite eine für viele Athleten traurige Meldung. Der in den letzten Jahren beliebte IRONMAN 70.3 Pula wird nicht mehr stattfinden.

Die Zeichen deuteten bereits darauf hin, denn mit der Vorstellung des neuen Bewerbs in Slowenien, der nur knapp 100 Kilometer von Pula entfernt ist und zudem zu einem ähnlichen Zeitpunkt stattfinden sollte, sowie der noch immer nicht veröffentliche Termin des Rennens in Pula ließen für uns und unsere Leser einige Fragen offen. Diese dürften nun geklärt sein, denn heute hat der Veranstalter das Aus des Bewerbs verlautbart.

IRONMAN und Pula – eine turbulente Geschichte

IRONMAN und Pula – eine Geschichte, die von Beginn an unter keinem allzu guten Stern stand. Bei der Premiere im Jahr 2015 gab es nach zahlreichen Versäumnissen in der Vorbereitung seitens des Lizenznehmers eine turbulente Erstveranstaltung. Erst durch enormen zusätzlichen Personalaufwand von Seiten des Lizenzgebers IRONMAN konnte die Erstveranstaltung über die Bühne gebracht werden. Probleme mit der Schwimmstrecke verursachten damals ein Chaos bei den Teilnehmern, von denen ein großer Teil nicht die korrekte Strecke schwimmen konnte. Aufgrund dessen musste am Ende der Schwimmbewerb sogar völlig aus der Wertung gestrichen werden. Auch in den Jahren darauf blieb man von Problemen nicht verschont.

Diese waren aber weniger durch schlechte Organisation verursacht, sondern vor allem dem Wetterpech geschuldet. Nachdem im Jahr 2016 der Bewerb trotz eines sintflutartigen Wolkenbruchs gut über die Bühne ging, musste im heurigen Jahr  das Schwimmen aufgrund zu gefährlicher Bedingungen schon im Vorfeld abgesagt und der Bewerb als Bike&Run durchgeführt werden. Die Veranstalter erklären das Aus des Bewerbs auf deren Facebook-Seite mit den folgenden Worten:

It started as the „ROAD TO PULA“ 3 years ago, when we took the long route of the pioneers in this region with a lot of obstacles on it. Now we reached our final destination.

We are most proud of the track record of the past races (including TRICLUB races, IRONKIDS and IRONGIRL FUN RUN) executed SAFELY, which defies the odds. The race became a popular one due to the beauty of the surrounding and the fact that athletes became „MODERN GLADIATORS“ in „THE ARENA“.

IRONMAN 70.3 Pula Croatia has been an integral part of the development of IRONMAN and especially of the IRONMAN TRICLUB EMEA by supporting their marketing for it, making special entry and accomodation offers for the athletes.

Meanwhile the growth of the IRONMAN events worldwide and in EMEA region has given potential competitors more race options to choose from. When the IRONMAN 70.3 Pula race began in 2015, there were not so many races especially not in „September“ and not in the „neighbourhood“. We want no longer compete for the attendance when there are so many other races an athlete can choose from without the expense and distance of coming to Pula.

Also after 3 years bringing the world to Pula post seasonal and not having 100% cooperation from so many key people, host city and participating government offices and agencies, sponsors, the Pula Istria Croatia community (accept the local Police Department that has been incredible supporter of the event and very few local businesses – like especially „ARENA HOSPITALITY GROUP “ – and individuals step up), paying for „volunteers“ for having a save closed bike course, made our decision process easier: things must come to an end.

Although athletes have loved the unique setting, but the iconic event with the most stunning unique finish line „THE ARENA“ is now officially „HISTORY“. Every „PULA ATHLETE“ is part of that history. We created great pictures for eternity.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to all athletes and their supporters for making this first event on the Balkans unforgettable. Thanks to our employees, local and EMEA staff members, partners, „unpaid“ volunteers, friends and families. 😗

But it is our wise decision to make 2017 the last year to stage with IRONMAN – wanting to finish on a positive note.👍
